A Shining Example

   Dolores Shine, 81 years young, is a Philadelphian by birth, upbringing and choice.  When she was 16. her      father, concerned for his family’s safety and longing for a more peaceful lifestyle, moved to rural south New  Jersey, to try farm living.  Dolores, unlike of all her siblings, never got accustomed to living as a farm girl  nor the lack of public transportation (among other things!) and packed up her bags immediately after high  school graduation , moving back to her beloved  City of Philadelphia, where “you can get a bus on any  corner”.  And here she has stayed ever since!  Dolores worked as a nurse’s aide, receiving her training at  Einstein Hospital.  Dolores, a devoted mother of    6 children, grandmother and great grandmother, has always carved out time to devote to others; her family, her church, her community, her “patients”.    Continuing the legacy of “service” to others, 3 of Dolores’ 5 sons joined the Armed Services, 2 in the Navy and the other in the Army.  One of her granddaughters is in the Marines.

Dolores is a cancer survivor and has suffered 2 heart attacks.   Even at her bleakest moments, her sense of humor keeps her going.  In the midst of chemotherapy,  Dolores motivated the healthcare workers to hurry up and get her out of there, as her patients were waiting and seniors can’t wait that long for her to get back to them custom essay writing!  Dolores has been trained as a lector, reading the Scriptures in her Church, Our Lady of Hope, for religious services for over 40   years, and shares that strong, clear and lovely voice as a reader for those who are blind. Dolores has done this as a Senior Companion through the PCA.  She has received recognition for her services from many organizations, including the VNA, the Hospice of Philadelphia, the PCA Senior Companion Program

Most of Dolores’ service goes unnoticed by the majority of Philadelphians, but for those who know of her and her selfless service for others, Dolores  “Shines”.
